“It’s great to see that Canberra and the ACT have taken a progressive approach by decriminalising sex work, ensuring that sex workers can now enjoy the same rights as other workers. This move aligns the territory with other regions like New South Wales and Victoria, providing a more regulated and safer environment for all involved. Recently, there have also been changes to the laws surrounding workplace safety in the sex industry. The introduction of new WorkSafe regulations now requires that any suspected reports of sexual assault be reported, which is an important step toward ensuring the safety and well-being of workers. However, the use of the Oxford Dictionary definition in these guidelines has caused some confusion. I reached out to the Commissioner regarding this issue, as the definition provided is broad and unclear, making it challenging for workers and employers to fully understand what qualifies as a reportable incident. Clearer, more specific guidelines would greatly help to avoid misunderstandings and ensure compliance. Overall, it’s encouraging to see both legal and regulatory frameworks evolving to better protect the rights and safety of all individuals in the sex industry.”
